Jali – What Benni Brought To Pirates

Former Orlando Pirates midfielder Andile Jali says Benni McCarthy brought more than just his playing quality when he joined the club.

McCarthy the all-time top goal scorer for Bafana Bafana with 31 goals joined the Buccaneers towards the end of his playing career in 2011 having spent 14 years playing abroad where he also won the UEFA Champions League with Porto.

The former AmaZulu and Cape Town City coach signed a two year deal as a free agent after leaving West Ham.

McCarthy went on to score 10 goals for Pirates in his first season helping the side win a second successive treble inclusive of the league title, the MTN 8 and Telkom Knockout Cup.

After the stint he stepped into coaching, worked in the PSL, at Manchester United and currently with Harambee Stars.

Speaking on the Arena Sports show the former Mamelodi Sundowns man revealed that the Kenya national team coach brought leadership and unity in a side that was showing divisions.

“The unity because there was a point where Pirates sometimes there were cliques, Coloureds one side and Black guys one side,” said Jail.

“Then what he did was to bring everyone closer together because if we are to be successful everyone needs to be on the same side.

“From there they also matured and we started bonding, started eating lunch together and did different things together and you could see there weren’t any separation anymore of groups doing different things.”
