Jordaan – VAR Is Coming To The PSL

By Velile Mnyandu (@Velile_Mnyandu)

Amid a season marred by questionable referee decisions, VAR could be introduced in the PSL, according to SAFA president Danny Jordaan.

The 69-year-old recently returned from a CAF Executive meeting, which he attended in his capacity as an advisor on marketing and competitions to new CAF president Patrice Motsepe.

Jordaan feels it is time that SAFA and the PSL should introduce the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) in professional football in South Africa sooner rather than later, because the country is being left behind by North African nations, who almost all introduced it already.

He confirmed that VAR will be implemented at the upcoming AFCON in Cameroon next year, which gives the PSL an opportunity to work with the company that would be in charge of the process.

“It will not be a long wait before we talk about the introduction of the VAR in the country,” Jordaan told iDiski Times senior writer Velile Mnyandu.

“In fact, when I was in Kigali, I had this discussion because remember, VAR will be introduced completely at the AFCON in Cameroon, they have bought a high number of these machines from Germany. I had a conversation with them, and I will be taking a proposal to the SAFA National Executive Committee on the question of VAR.

“So, in the next NEC meeting, we will discuss it because we’ll have to place the orders. Of course, there’s a huge list, and we hope that we can sneak in on that list and get ahead of some of the countries that’s already in the list.”

SAFA’s chairperson of the referees’ technical committee, Jerome Damon, who is also the FIFA referees’ development officer for Africa, is leading the introduction of VAR on the continent as a FIFA/CAF VAR instructor.

iDiski Times understands that Damon and the SAFA referees Head of Department Abdul Ebrahim would be expected to present to the SAFA NEC, the next processes to follow in the introduction of the VAR, as just training alone could take up to two years.

In the current SAFA national panel of match officials, only Victor Gomes and Zakhele Siwela are on VAR and have handled continental matches officiating on VAR.

Meanwhile, the first half of the 2020/21 DStv Premiership season was marred by questionable match officiating, which led to SAFA placing on ice a number of match officials, including members of the national elite panel like Cedric Muvhuali, Thokozani Mkhize and current Referee of the Season Jelly Chavani.

On Thursday, Benni McCarthy was very blunt with his criticism for the match official Siyabulela Qunta, putting pressure on the PSL to be more accountable for their referee’s performances.

There is more quality content in this week’s iDiski Times, edition 20, including a big interview with Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Lebohang Maboe, Baroka’s Goodman Mosele comments rumours linking him with Orlando Pirates, while Nathan Sinkala, Joel Masutha and Arthur Zwane also feature.
