Former Kaizer Chiefs and Bafana Bafana goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune believes the standard of goalkeeping in the country has dropped and that the situation can be remedied.
Khune hasn’t exactly retired but has been inactive since leaving Chiefs in June 2024 and is now observing from the sidelines.

However, he has enjoyed a stellar career that saw him play for Chiefs more than 300 times and has 91 caps for the national team where he’s also won the armband for both club and country.
The 38-year-old spoke to iDiski Times senior journalist Matshelane Mamabolo in edition 248 where he named fewer recognized goalkeeper coaches and limited opportunities for local keepers as some of the reasons for the decline.
“The standard of goalkeeping has dropped,” Khune told iDiski Times.
“That’s because we have a lack of goalkeeper coaches in the country. So that’s why I said, ‘What can I do differently to help?’
Khune adds that he hopes to make difference through his goalkeeping Distribution 101 Goalkeeping Academy.
“Obviously, we want to open more doors for goalkeeper coaches that are not recognised out there,” added the man from Ventersdorp.
“And hopefully, when someone hears that this goalkeeper is working with Itu at the Distribution 101 Goalkeeping Academy, it will open doors so that those goalkeepers can improve the standard of our goalkeeping in the country.”
Dubbed ‘Mzansi’s Number One’ during his playing days, Khune recently made a return to Amakhosi and is part of the Legends team that was scheduled to take on their fiercest rivals Orlando Pirates in a Legends Derby clash this coming weekend, though the event has since been cancelled.
