Maritzburg Thrash Chippa, But Draws In Other Games

Maritzburg United put five past Chippa United, while there were draws between Cape Town City and Baroka, and Swallows and Golden Arrows, in Saturday’s DStv Premiership action.

Swallows 1-1 Golden Arrows

Swallows grabbed a last minute equaliser to draw 1-1 with Arrows at the Dobsonville Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Zephaniah Mbokoma almost opened the scoring in the 23rd minute, but Sifiso Mlungwana pulled off a good save to deny the home team.

But while it was an entertaining and fast-paced first half, there was very little action in the final third and at half-time it remained goalless.

Swallows came close to taking the lead in the 51st minute, but Kagiso Malinga couldn’t get his header on target, after getting to the end of a good cross from Kgaogelo Sekgota.

Malinga was close again in the 69th minute, as his powerful effort flew just wide of the goal.

Just when it looked like Swallows were the most likely to take the lead, Arrows hit the home team on the break, Seth Parusnath getting onto the end of a ball from Knox Mutizwa (that Pule Mmodi missed) and Parusnath side footed it into the net for what looked to be the winner.

But Swallows were not to be denied, and with virtually the last kick of the game, Vuyo Mere, who was captain on the day, scored from close range. The officials seemed to miss that Mere came from an off-side position, and allowed the goal.

Maritzburg United 5-1 Chippa United

Maritzburg came from a goal down to beat Chippa 5-1 at the Harry Gwala Stadium on Saturday evening

Anthony Laffor had a chance for the visitors in the 8th minute, but his attempt was easily dealt with by Marcel Engelhardt.

And it was the visitors who took the lead, as Ayubulela Konqobe set up Maloisane Mokhele in the 28th minute, and he scored his fourth goal of the season.

In-form Thabiso Kutumela levelled matters for the home team in the 36th minute, as he struck home with his left foot to make it 1-1.

And he did it again a minute later, Kutumela put Maritzburg into the lead from the edge of the area with his sixth goal in five games.

Five minutes into the second half Bongokuhle Hlongwane made it three for the Team of Choice, slotting into the bottom right corner. 3-1.

Tebogo Tlolane made it four in the 80th minute, after being set up by Ali Meza, before Meza added the fifth in the 87th minute

Cape Town City 0-0 Baroka

Cape Town City and Baroka couldn’t be separated as they played to a goalless draw at Cape Town Stadium.

Craig Martin had a good chance to take the lead in the 18th minute, but after racing onto the end of a ball from Thabo Nodada, Martin blasted it over.

Martin had another chance six minutes later, but his attempt went straight at Oscarine Masuluke.

It wasn’t all one-way traffic, and Baroka had a few opportunities of their own in the first half, but Peter Leeuwenburgh’s goal was never really threatened.

At the break it was goalless.

A minute into the second half Fagrie Lakay tried to chip Masuluke, but he couldn’t get the ball over the tall goalkeeper.

Evedence Makgopa should have made it 1-0 to Baroka in the 58th minute, but somehow he missed his tap in from in front of goal.

Joslin Kamatuka went just wide in the 71st minute, as he couldn’t keep his headed attempt on target.

Tashreeq Morris had a chance in the 85th minute but his attempt went tamely to Masuluke.
