Well-travelled former Cape Town City midfielder Mpho Matsi is currently training with GladAfrica Championship side University of Pretoria.
Although he hasn’t signed any contract with the club yet, iDiski Times has gathered the 31-year-old midfielder could possibly make a return to where his professional football had started.
Matsi burst onto the scenes with Tuks over a decade ago. He then joined Mpumalanga Black Aces, where he spent a season before John Comitis bought the club and relocated it to Cape Town.
He was a regular under Eric Tinkler, but found playing time tougher under Benni McCarthy, and spent time out on loan at Maritzburg United and Stellenbosch.
Matsi has been out of action since his Stellenbosch loan spell from City ended in 2020 – he had last kicked a ball in the 2020/2021 season at Stellies.
“I am a free agent, but I started training with University of Pretoria last week,” Matsi told iDiski Times.
“They have just offered me a chance to train with them to keep myself fit, I did rehab with them while I was injured.
“There are no contracts talks as yet, they haven’t spoken about it, they just asked me to come to train with the team, so I’m keeping fit.
“I even wanted to give up, I felt like I won’t come back, but you know Tuks have good equipments – so it gave me hope that I will come back.”
Matsi has also now revealed the reasons he couldn’t return to the Citizens – saying he was injured for a period of time and the club had no plans for him anymore.
“I had still more two-year contract with City, but they terminated because I was injured, so now I am a free agent.
“I was at Stellenbosch on loan from Cape Town City, so I got injured and told I will be out for nine months.
“So when the loan ended, City decided to terminate my contract because I was injured, and Stellies couldn’t keep me because I was injured – which is understandable.”
