McCarthy’s Son Elated After Chiefs Call

The son of former Kaizer Chiefs defender Fabian McCarthy has expressed his disbelief after being named in the senior squad on Sunday.

Aden McCarthy, 17, was named on the bench for the senior team amid the Covid-19 crisis that’s seen them unable to honour fixtures against Cape Town City and Golden Arrows over the past two weeks.

The teenage defender was rewarded for his consistent displays in the 2021 DStv Diski Challenge season under the guidance of Arthur Zwane – who was in charge of their 2-0 win over Sekhukhune United in the absence of head coach Stuart Baxter who is still under quarantine.

“From being a Kaizer Chiefs ball-boy for four seasons when I was a small boy to me being in the matchday squad for a league game,” he wrote on social media after the game.

“My dreams are slowly but surely turning into reality and I am very grateful and thankful to the man above.”

His father Fabian featured for Amakhosi for five years between 2003 and 2008 after joining from Mamelodi Sundowns and also represented the senior South African national team. He is now a TV pundit.
