Memela – There Is No Loyalty In South African Football

Former AmaZulu and Orlando Pirates and now-Richards Bay winger, Luvuyo Memela said that he made peace with it a long time ago that there is no loyalty in South African football.

The 35-year-old was one of the standout players for Usuthu last season, but when the campaign came to an end his contract wasn’t renewed and he was allowed to leave the club

Memela’s release came as a surprise, and even more so when he was named AmaZulu’s player of last season after his exit from the club.

Memela was speaking to Velile Mnyandu in iDiski Times, and said he didn’t dwell on his exit, and moved on.

“Ah my brother, for me that’s something in the past, like I made peace with it while I was still at home, when I found out I was being released,” Memela told iDisk Times.

“I made peace. I think within a week when I left them, I was like okay, let’s open the next page or next chapter wherever I was gonna go. It’s football, you can’t change it. Football is like that, it happened so we move on.”

Memela said unfortunately he had long ago come to terms that loyalty was not something common in South African football.

” Yeah, but you must know in football there is no loyalty,” Memela continued.

“I’m sure you all know that. How many players have represented teams here in this country, even the national team? You have the likes of Bhuti Lucas Radebe, he even has a statue in Leeds in England, but what is he doing for our country, our national team? Do you get me?

“I don’t want to say in football, but in South African football there is no loyalty. It’s not something that’s surprising, even I wasn’t surprised that much. I made peace a long time ago that there is no loyalty in South African football.

“It’s not even something to talk about, but you guys know it too, it’s not even something that is hidden but it’s something that’s just out there to see, it’s life.”
