Mhango Reacts To Pirates Contract Extension

Orlando Pirates striker Gabadinho Mhango has reacted to his recent contract extension at the club.

The Malawi talisman’s contract was set to expire at the end of the season, but his agent Mike Makaab has confirmed to iDiski Times Pirates took up the option to extend his stay until 2023.

The 29-year-old, who was stared at the Africa Cup of Nations for the Flames, scoring three goals in three matches, has insisted that he wants to show the fans a “new Gabadinho Mhango”.

“That was also my concern because other players were playing ahead of me and you must play for your contract,” he told Thomas Mlambo on the Ultimate Sports Show.

“I never got my chance for me being part of the team. But I think the team believes that I can still do better and when I went to the office and they communicated that they would renew my contract I was happy.

“I think this contract is going to make a difference for me to be the new Gabadinho Mhango. I want to do better now.

“I want to help my team, my teammates. I think we will do better, and we have got the support always. I think we will do better this time.”

The 29-year-old also insisted that he feels honoured to continue to represent one of the biggest teams on the continent.

“It’s great, like I say, Pirates is the biggest team in Africa,” he added.

“Pirates is the team that everyone wants to play for, everyone down there when you play football, you have the idea of that ‘I would like to play for Pirates’.

“Even sometimes when I speak to people from Malawi who played for Pirates they will always encourage me, they always tell me like ‘boy, this is a big team in Africa’.

“Even European teams or whoever they know about this Orlando Pirates team. So yeah, for me, I was happy when the office said they would extend the contract, I was very happy.”

Mhango has only featured four times, having assisted once in the DStv Premiership this season so far.
