Mngqithi – It’s Not Something We Always Focus On

Speaking ahead of today’s CAF Champions League game against TP Mazembe, Mamelodi Sundowns Co Head Coach Manqoba Mngqithi says that their unbeaten run this season is not something they really focus on.

The DStv Premiership leaders have only lost one match this season, way back in October, when Bloemfontein Celtic upset them in the MTN8 quarter-finals, and since then Masandawana have been unbeaten in all competitions.

But Mngqithi says it is not something they are focussed on, and they prefer to keep their focus on each game they are set to play.

He says records like that can be distractions, especially when you are competing in multiple competitions.

“To be honest, it’s not something that we always focus on,” Mnqithi told the media this week.

“And in my coaching history, I think one thing that I’ve always managed, even with smaller teams, I don’t lose easily, we do lose, but not very easy.”

“So when Sundowns has got the material that we have, and we are able to play so many matches without a loss, it’s probably based on the quality that we have, from the technical coaches I work with, the analysis department and everyone, the medical team, conditioning department, everybody works very hard.”

“And the players are buying into our playing concept and what we’re trying to achieve with them. So we are never really focusing on records, we are focusing on each match as it comes.”

“And it’s always better when you’re competing in so many competitions, because you will end up losing track of what you want to achieve if you’re focused on all these records and all these beaten or not beaten runs.”

Sundowns are top of Group B in the CAFCL group stages, with 3 wins in 3 games, and victory today would guarantee them top spot in the group and a place in the quarter-finals.
