Mokwena Reveals ‘Big’ Zungu & Lebusa Blow

Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Rulani Mokwena has revealed that both Bongani Zungu and Mosa Lebusa will be out of action for a month, calling it a “big blow” for his side.

Zungu was taken off after 13 minutes during the CAF Champions League quarter-final first leg against Young Africans SC, and the injury comes at a time when the former Rangers midfielder was starting to cement a place in Mokwena’ line-up and also laid two assists in the new calendar year.

Lebusa could only play 70 minutes against Yanga, as he was substituted too. The former Ajax Cape Town defender had helped Sundowns to keep five clean sheets in the last five games, but both will be sidelined for the foreseeable future.

“An update on Zungu, he’s got a hernia but it’s a little bit up and towards the side, something he has been struggling with a little bit,” Mokwena said after the match, as per Masandawana Fan Vlog.

“And the early prognosis is that he will be out for about four weeks, him and Mosa [Lebusa], which is a big blow for us.

“But fortunately, we’re getting Mothobi [Mvala] back at a very important time. We’re getting Rushin [De Reuck] also back, who was on the bench, and Brain Onyango is always reliable and ready.

“We are okay, and how good was Aubaas in that position today – he was amazing. So, we should be okay.

“Hopefully we can get AB [Boutouil] back because he gives us a lot of options, at centre-back, left centre-back, left-back, inverted left-back, third midfielder…

“The numbers are getting there and AB should be back but I think Bongz and Mosa probably in the next four weeks, maybe towards the end of the season, the last couple of weeks they will be back.”

Sundowns host Young Africans in the second of their CAF Champions League quarter-final on Friday night at Loftus Versfeld Stadium.
