Mokwena – Sixth Time Lucky

Mamelodi Sundowns co-head coach Rulani Mokwena says Masandawana’s 1-0 victory over Al Ahly is an important part of history, but preferred not to comment about the referee.

Mokwena was shown a red card in Sundowns’ 1-0 CAF Champions League group stages match in Cairo, their first ever win over Ahly in Egypt.

Mokwena says it’s a historical win, and while they will celebrate the landmark, they need to focus on their upcoming DStv Premiership fixtures.

“It’s an important part of history,” Mokwena told the club’s media department.

“It’s an important part of history because we haven’t won in Cairo in the last five outings.

“So it was sixth time lucky. We hadn’t scored in Cairo, so you kick two buckets with one stone, you can then be in a position to celebrate a little bit of the landmark and the achievement and try to focus on what’s next because we’ve got two very, very important games now.

“We’ve got TS Galaxy and we’ve got Maritzburg so we need to bring our feet firmly back on the ground.

“We’ve only got 24 hours. So 24 hours has elapsed, and we start focusing on the next news.”

Mokwena was shown a red card in the game, and had to watch the second half from the stands.

“Ja, I don’t talk about the referees,” he added.

“I refrain from talking about referees. Everybody saw the performance and it’s for everybody to judge.

“I don’t have a comment.”
