Orlando Pirates came from two goals down to secure a 3-2 win over SuperSport United in a heated DStv Premiership clash at Orlando Stadium on Wednesday evening.
SuperSport came out the blocks in emphatic fashion against a Pirates side who would have been buoyed after their 3-0 win over Royal Leopard in the CAF Confederation Cup at the same venue on Sunday.
However, 20-year-old Keagan Johannes and Ghampani Lungu had other ideas as they profited from lax defending at set-pieces to hand SuperSport a 2-0 lead after just twenty minutes.
Pirates looked shellshocked by the bright start and took a while to compose themselves to impose themselves at their home ground against the visitors and it was an event swifter chain of events that saw them back into the game.
As the break approaches with Kaitano Tembo’s youthful side looking comfortable, Johannes conceded two penalties in the space of two minutes with Deon Hotto slotting both home in stoppage-time.
The second of the spot-kicks appeared soft which clearly riled up Tembo who stormed up to the officials when he signalled the end of the opening half.
SuperSport’s anger showed immediately in the second half as they looked to chase the game again but it was Pirates who stole the victory in the final moments of the game as Goodman Mosele’s long-range strike edged the game 3-2.
The victory moves the Buccaneers three points behind second-placed Royal AM and two points behind third-placed Kaizer Chiefs albeit having played two games more than AM and four more than Amakhosi.
In the other two results of the day, Marumo Gallants and Chippa United played out to a goalless draw while Maritzburg United and Sekhukhune United shared the spoils in a 1-1 draw.
