Motsepe Makes Huge PSL Announcement

CAF President Dr Patrice Motsepe, in the conjunction with the Motsepe Foundation and the Premier Soccer League, has made a huge announcement on Friday morning in Sandton, launching the Motsepe Foundation Championship.

Motsepe has been home in South Africa for the past week or so, and took the opportunity to make this announcement, alongside PSL Chairman Dr Irvin Khoza, before flying out to the WAFCON in Morocco.

Motsepe announced that the Motsepe Foundation will be coming in as the new title sponsor of the National First Division, replacing GladAfrica who had been the sponsor for the past three seasons.

The second tier will now be known as the Motsepe Foundation Championship.

“South African football has a long and proud history and has produced some of the most talented players in Africa and the world,” Motsepe said in the statement.

“It is an honour for the Motsepe Foundation to make a humble contribution to the development and growth of South African football and to making South African football amongst the best in Africa and globally.

“Dr Khoza contacted me yesterday and requested to meet me urgently and after talking to some of the Trustees of companies associated with the Motsepe Family an agreement was reached to launch the Motsepe Foundation Championship.

“We would also like to thank the PSL and its Chairman Dr Khoza for his relentless efforts to attract sponsors and partners to the PSL.”

Motsepe also confirmed that they will be looking to increase the prize money for the competition.

Dr Khoza confirmed that previous sponsors GladAfrica had notified him this week that they were unable to continue their sponsorship, and he was grateful to Motsepe for stepping in at the last minute to fill the void.

“We are grateful to the Motsepe Foundation for contributing to the sustainability and promotion of South African football,” Dr Khoza said.

“I am excited that my urgent request to the Motsepe Foundation for support was accepted and activated at short notice. I knew that Dr Patrice Motsepe would be departing on Friday night for the TotalEnergies CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco and we wanted to conclude and launch the Motsepe Foundation Championship before his departure.”
