South African Striker Darren Smith has earned himself a move to Finland’s top league after an impressive season in the lower division.
Smith has signed a new contract with topflight Finnish Club FC Honka after a great season where he scored 18 goals in 22 matches for Ekenas his previous club. Smith even won a golden boot as the top goalscorer in the Ykkonen league, which is a division below the top flight.
Expressing his excitement about the move, the former SuperSport United striker said:
“When I came to Finland, my goal was to play in the Veikkausliiga. However, I knew I had to go step by step. I had options for this season, but the decision to come to Honka was very easy in the end. I think Honka’s style of play fits my strengths very well. Also, of course, the place in the Europeans for next season was a big factor. Honka clearly showed that they are interested in me and I immediately felt welcome in this company”
Smith’s new team will have a chance to play in the Europa League having secured a spot to play in the qualifiers for next season.
