Nedbank Cup Quarter-Final Draw

The draw for the quarter-finals of the Nedbank Cup took place on Monday evening with Mamelodi Sundowns set to face Summerfield Dynamos.

Sundowns are one of five DStv Premiership sides that were in the draw. They are also one of three former champions, alongside SuperSport United and Marumo Gallants. Both Sundowns and SuperSport have won this tournament (in all it’s incarnations) five times each.

Gallants, who knocked out Orlando Pirates to reach the last eight, are the defending champions, after winning it for the first time last season, however they were known as Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila at the time, before owner Abram Sello changed the name at the end of last season.

In an ironic twist of fate, Tshakhuma, are also still alive in the competition, after Lawrence Mulaudzi revived TTM when he bought Royal AM’s GladAfrica Championship’s status ahead of the current campaign, with Royal AM purchasing Bloemfontein Celtic’s DStv Premiership status.

The ‘new’ Royal AM franchise, and Baroka are the other two top flight sides in the last eight, while GladAfrica’s AmaTuks and ABC Motsepe side Summerfield Dynamos complete the lineup.

The Clinton Larsen-coached Dynamos, the recently-crowned KZN ABC champs, had to go through a qualifying tournament, before beating Uthongathi and Black Eagles to reach this stage, will now face a herculean challenge, as they travel to take on Sundowns in a David versus Goliath affair.

Two other fixtures feature top flight and second tier sides, as Tshakhuma wil host SuperSport, while Royal AM welcome AmaTuks.

Meanwhile Gallants will host fellow Limpopo top flight side, Baroka.

The Full Draw:

Mamelodi Sundowns v Summerfield Dynamos

Marumo Gallants v Baroka

Tshakhuma v SuperSport United

Royal AM v AmaTuks
