Mngqithi – There Were Some Areas That We Were Very Unhappy About

April 9, 2022

Mamelodi Sundowns co-head coach Manqoba Mngqithi was pleased to score two early goals as they beat Summerfield Dynamos 5-0 to reach the Nedbank Cup semi-finals, but was still unhappy with elements of their game.

Kermit Erasmus scored a brace, while there were also goals from Lesedi Kapinga, Pavol Safranko and Gaston Sirino at Loftus Stadium, with the Uruguayan also grabbing a hattrick of assists.

Mngqithi, who had high praise for Dynamos’ coach Clinton Larsen, said while the early goals meant the game took shape the way they wanted, he wasn’t happy about the application from his team at times, especially in the first half.

However, he was pleased to give more players game time, as he said they will need their full squad for the remainder of the season.

“We knew we were playing against a team that is very organised, a formidable side with a very brilliant coach in Clinton Larsen,” Mngqithi said at the post-match press conference.

“Also a team that has got a lot of ex-professional players, Nene, Zuke, you name them, they’ve got quite a lot of those players, Nguzana even Lerato Manzini in is in that space, but I think the first half, the good thing is that we wanted an early goal to make sure that the game takes shape immediately if they are coming with a low block, they’re immediately forced to come out and try to equalize then the game is open for us.

“We were fortunate to get those two goals, but I think again after those two goals we gave a little bit of time and space on the ball, Zuke managed to have a lot of time on the ball in the latter stages of the first half, which made us to look like we were defending a bit deep, and we try to push but maybe the players could not understand exactly what we were saying at that time, because we were unhappy that they were having diagonal balls now going into their fullbacks, possibilities of getting even behind the defence.

“But I think second half we came back with a more resolute mind to try and bury the game, and also press a lot from the top and force a lot of errors even from their centrebacks, which we did.

“But there were some areas that we were very unhappy about. I think we gave them two or three counterattacks first half, one of them if the goalkeeper had a good delivery, our rest defence was very bad.

“But we are learning from this, and the players that were playing, most of them do not play regularly, so it was also good for them to get a run and really gain these minutes that are very important in our preparation for all these competitions because as the competition progresses we will need everyone.”
