Sundowns Fly Into Nedbank Last 16

Mamelodi Sundowns joined AmaTuks in the Nedbank Cup last 16 after the DStv Premiership champions beat GladAfrica Championship leaders Richards Bay 4-0 at the Princess Magogo Stadium on Friday evening.

Richards Bay 0-4 Mamelodi Sundowns

It was a fairly open start to the game, and the home team put some early pressure on their more-fancied opponents. But soon the DStv Premiership champs began to control the game and Peter Shalulile had a half chance in the 17th minute, but his attempt lacked power and Malcolm Jacobs made a simple save.

But it wasn’t long before Sundowns were in front, as they opened the scoring in the 24th minute. Surprise Ralani having the ideal debut as he blasted in the opener.

With five minutes to go to half-time, Thabiso Kutumela had a half chance, but his shot went high and wide of goal. Moments later Andile Jali was off target as well, and at the break it remained 1-0 to Sundowns.

Shalulile had the ball in the back of the net in the 49th minute, but it was ruled out for off-side, while Lyle Lakay’s attempt from range a minute later was off target.

But it was 2-0 in the 54th minute, as an unmarked Rushine De Reuck headed in from a Kutumela corner kick.

Siphamandla Ncanana’s header was on target in the 58th minute, but it was down the throat of Kennedy Mweene, while two minutes later Vusimuzi Mngomezulu shot wide.

Sundowns’ other new signing, Teboho Mokoena, made his debut off the bench, coming on in the 62nd minute.

Khuliso Mudau forced a save out of Jacobs in the 68th minute, but it was 3-0 as substitute Pavol Safranko headed in two minutes later.

Lakay forced another good save from Jacobs in the 76th minute, and again ten minutes later from a free kick, with Jacobs saving onto the woodwork.

But Sundowns were not to be denied and Shalulile headed in the fourth in the 88th minute, Lakay with the assist.

Sundowns comfortably through to the last 16.

AmaTuks 2-0 Chippa United

AmaTuks became the first team to reach the Nedbank Cup last sixteen after beating Chippa United 2-0 at the Tuks Stadium on Friday afternoon.

Unfortunately after 15 minutes the teams had to leave the pitch, as a lighting storm came over the stadium. An hour later the match eventually resumed.

It was a frustrating game, with the weather affecting the performances, and it looked like the match was heading to a goalless draw until with ten minutes to go the home team suddenly pounced.

They were in the lead in the 80th minute, as Lulama Maqoko ran onto Siyanda Msani’s cross and headed in at the near post to make it 1-0.

A minute later it was 2-0 as Kamohelo Pheeane took advantage of a defensive slip up between Mtshali and his defence, and the Tuks man was able to gather the ball and score into an empty net.

End of the road for last season’s finalists, as AmaTuks progress.
