Tembo Targets Nedbank Cup Victory

January 13, 2022

SuperSport United coach Kaitano Tembo has shared his views on being drawn against Maritzburg United in the Nedbank Cup, setting up back-to-back matches against the Team of Choice.

SuperSport are set to face Maritzburg in the DStv Premiership in their next league game, scheduled for the 15th of February at the Harry Gwala Stadium.

“Well, playing against Maritzburg United in the Nedbank Cup will be very difficult considering that I think they are our first game as well, from the break, we’re playing them on the 15th of February in the league game,” Tembo told the club’s media department.

“So it’s not going to be an easy game. But looking at our past results, I think in the past two seasons in the Nedbank Cup, we haven’t gone past the first round.

“And so we would want to change that, we want to try and go all out because this is the only cup that is left for us to really fight for, that we feel that we have an opportunity, we have a chance to fight for.

“So, though it’s not going to be an easy game, but I think we’ve got the players and the team to go out there and get the result and progress to the next round.”

Tembo also spoke about the break, and says that it is always difficult to gauge a team’s readiness from friendlies.

“Well, coming off a huge break. It’s always difficult because you don’t really know how prepared you are, because all you do you playing friendly games,” he continued.

“And often the games are not competitive games, so you can only know where you are in terms of your preparedness on the first day of the league, the first game, the first competitive game you play, after this huge break, will give you an indication of where the team is.

“So we always gonna prepare normally, the way we always prepare and we’ve been working very hard, the team, and I think by the time the game approaches we will be ready and lucky enough we only have two players who [are] away with the Afcon, that’s Onismor Bhasera and Kuda Mahachi, and the rest of the group is around and we working very hard.”

SuperSport have a good history in cup competitions and Tembo says they need to use that to their advantage.

“Well, the key factor in this game, in this fixture, it’s a cup game,” Tembo added.

“And the cup game is all or nothing, that’s the difference. With a league game you can always recover in the next game, but this one when you lose it, you’re out, there is no second chances. So that’s the key factor.

“And we’ve got experience in terms of playing also cup competitions. I think we need to try and use that to our advantage.

“But we will prepare well, when the time is right, I think we’ll be ready.”
