Cape Town City Coach Jan Olde Riekerink was pleased after their Western Cape derby win over Stellenbosch on Tuesday night.
City were 2-1 victors in the DSTV Premiership game at the Danie Craven Stadium, and the Dutch coach says his team did well, especially in the first half.
Thabo Nodada and Craig Martin scored for City, while Nathan Sinkala scored a consolation goal for the home team.
“At the end I think we deserved to win this game. It was a game of two phases because first half we scored two goals and I think we used all the right spaces in terms of how we instructed the team, and I think they did it very well” Riekerink said.
“Already before halftime they changed a little bit of structure of their team, and they put a lot of pressure on us in the second half. There were enough opportunities for us to counter but we were a little bit sloppy in the last ball because then the game could have been locked down even earlier.”
“But I think Stellenbosch played a good second half, but we not only have good players, we have a good team, and at that moment a little bit we got into a bit of a fighting game and I must give them my team a big compliment for the attitude and also for the team feeling and the way they expressed themselves because it was needed and they did it.”
“So I give my team a big compliment, as especially in the first half we played good football.”
