Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper Denis Onyango says they need to take Summerfield Dynamos seriously when they meet in the Nedbank Cup quarter-finals.
The DStv Premiership champions were drawn against Clinton Larsen’s ABC Motsepe league minnows in Monday’s night draw for the last eight.
The experienced Ugandan goalkeeper warns that there are no small teams when it gets down to the quarter-finals, and says Dynamos have a lot of players, and a coach, with professional experience.
“Ja, the draw against Summerfield, it’s a fair draw because obviously there are no so-called smaller teams when you get to the quarter-finals, especially in the Nedbank Cup, because it’s a cup of dreams,” Onyango told the club’s media department.
“So it’s a dream for Summerfield as well to play against Sundowns, but also for us, we must take the game, very serious as any other game.
“But most importantly, looking at Summerfield, they’ve got a few guys from the PSL, some few players and the coach also is very experienced, he was with PSL clubs.
“But for us, it’s all about getting the team to the next level and trying to qualify for the semi-finals, and giving the respect the game deserves.”
Onyango says preparing for a team like Dynamos can be tough, as there is not lot of footage of them playing.
“The Nedbank Cup is quite awkward because you when you played a team, like Summerfield, you don’t have a lot of footage for them,” Onyango continued.
“And you don’t know how dangerous they are. But they can hurt any other team.
“We’ve seen it and the experience that we’ve seen from other clubs that are being knocked out from the Nedbank Cup by the so-called smaller teams.
“So we need to dig deep and the analysts need to dig deep and get at least something for the players to watch and know how to deal with the team.”
