Onyango Reacts To Downs Win

Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper Denis Onyango has reacted to his side’s tough win over Cape Town City in the MTN8 final in Durban.

Masandawana were crowned the 2021 MTN8 champions after a 3-2 win on penalties at the Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday evening, after the match had ended 1-1.

The Downs skipper has admitted that it was a difficult match, but gives credit to his teammates for fighting until the final whistle.

“Yeah it was insane, but we kept on believing, the guys didn’t drop their heads, and we knew that they were dragging this game to penalties, and they knew that they can score, but we had it in mind that it’s our game,” he said after the match.

“Of course they started playing aggressive, keeping the ball, and we couldn’t cope with them, but of course with the mentality from the boys we kept going, we knew that we will drive them as well as we can.

“We missed a lot of chances to be honest, but they got one chance and they took it, but of course, good resilience from the boys.

“We knew most of them, where they kick, so I had to use my instincts, and of course actually I had to reward Kennedy because he started this journey of the penalties.

“And coach Rulani reminded me that Kennedy did very well in the first game against Chiefs. So I have to reward him, and this is what I had to give the team and the goalkeeping department.

“All goalkeepers played a huge role in this tournament. I think that’s why we managed to win it.”
