Polokwane City head coach Phuti Mohafe has made a bold claim that it’s easier to square up against Mamelodi Sundowns as opposed to Orlando Pirates.
Mohafe and his charges have already claimed a huge scalp over the defending Betway Premiership champions, beating them 1-0 in October 2024 though Masandawana won the corresponding fixture, running out comfortable 2-0 winners.
Rise and Shine, however, stood no chance against the Buccaneers and were hammered 3-0 eSgodini in September last year.
When asked about his opinion on the title contenders, Mohafe claimed that Pirates were the much difficult opponent to play against, while Sundowns’ style of play this campaign has made it easier to go toe-to-toe against.
“Orlando Pirates is stronger than Mamelodi Sundowns this season,” Mohafe told Andile Ncube on Sports Night Amplified.
“If you check the style of play it’s easier to play against Sundowns this season, Pirates plays with more intensity and quality so it’s harder to beat them.
“Sorry to Masandawana.”
With his charges currently occupying third spot on the league standings, just two points adrift of Pirates and eight off leaders Sundowns, the former Royal Eagles mentor is adamant that both sides will still drop points which would grant them an opportunity to challenge for the league title.

“According to ourselves, we still think Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates are still going to drop points and lose matches,” he said.
“So, we have to keep ourselves in touch to compete for the league.”
