Pirates Held By Setif

Orlando Pirates and ES Setif played to a goalless draw in their CAF Confederation Group A game at Orlando Stadium on Wednesday afternoon.

Pirates move to 9 points at the top of the group, 2 points ahead of Al Ahli Benghazi, 3 points ahead of Enyimba, while Setif move on to 5 points.

While Pirates have all but mathematically qualified for the quarter-finals, they will have to wait until the final round of games to ensure it, and where they finish in the group. All three other teams remain in the race. Pirates play away to Enyimba in the final round, while Setif host Al Ahli.

Orlando Pirates 0-0 ES Setif

It was a good start by the home team, in a high paced and competitive game, Deon Hotto getting the first shot on target in the 10th minute, but it was straight at Abdelouahab Khedairia in the Setif goal.

Tshegofatso Mabasa’s effort in the 18th minute looked on target, but was well blocked by a Setif defender.

Pirates suffered an early setback when goalkeeper Siyabonga Mpontshane had to be replaced in the 23rd minute, with the experienced Wayne Sandilands replacing him.

The Algerians were struggling to deal with the pace of Pirates’ attacks, who were causing all sorts of problems, though the final product left a bit to be desired.

Hotto got to the end of a cross from Vincent Pule in the 35th minute, but couldn’t keep his header down and skied it over the box.

Sandilands had to alert just before halftime as he got a hand on Akram Djahnit’s free kick, Setif’s first attempt on target, and at the break it remained goalless.

Mabasa should have opened the scoring in the 48th minute, but his somehow his effort from just in front of goal went narrowly wide.

While Pirates dominated the first half, the Algerians began to show more intent in the second half.

Sandilands had to be alert in the 50th minute as Mohammed Amoura had a good chance for the visitors, but the Pirates keeper made the save.

Pule had a chance in the 54th minute, but while he did well to reach the ball, his header went over, while Fortune Makaringe’s attempt four minutes later flew over the goal.

Amoura thought he had a penalty on the hour mark, after he was fouled by Thulani Hlatshwayo, but the referee awarded a free kick just outside the area. Sandilands made a good save to deny Diahnit’s free kick attempt.

Pule’s effort in the 64th minute went high and wide.

Hachoud some how missed a golden chance for Setif in the 87th minute, as his header flew narrowly wide of the Pirates goal.
