PSL chairman Dr Irvin Khoza has opened up on the matter of Kaizer Chiefs’ not honouring their fixture against Cape Town City.
Amakhosi insist they were not able to honour their fixture after a Covid-19 outbreak at Naturena that saw 31 members of the club’s stuff test positive.
This publication understands that Chiefs only had nine players, three of them being goalkeepers, available for selection on Saturday and subsequently pleaded with the PSL to postpone their December fixtures.
While the PSL did not publicly respond to Chiefs, Cape Town City chairman John Comitis stated on Friday that the league told Chiefs to honour their fixture.
However, the gates of FNB Stadium remained locked on Saturday evening, with only Cape Town City and the match officials appearing.
Dr Irvin Khoza insisted that he must be fair to all 32 teams in the league, insinuating he cannot give in to Chiefs request.
“All the PSL matches are continuing,” he told Sunday Times.
“We’re dealing with a process on this matter, not the sensations. We to give to give this matter the attention it deserves. The matter (Chiefs case) has been escalated to us and I can’t talk about the details now.
“There was a letter written by Chiefs requesting a postponement but I’m not giving the merits of the matter but the process.
“I can’t say much about that, I’m just saying the matter has been escalated to us (executive) and we’re supposed to meet Monday to further discuss it.
“As a PSL chairman I must be seen to be doing the right thing for all 32 PSL clubs. I can’t take a certain decision because I want to be liked by certain people.
“We’re dealing with the Chiefs matter as the PSL executive.”
The PSL and its member clubs all agreed at the start of the season that Covid would be an excuse to postpone matches.
All 32 member clubs agreed and Cape Umoya’s opponents Cape Town Spurs were handed a walkover for a similar case earlier in the year that saw Umoya not being able to honour their fixture.
