Royal AM Achieve Chiefs Double

Royal AM did a league double over Kaizer Chiefs as they walked away 1-0 winners in Sunday afternoon DStv Premiership action. In the later game Chippa United beat Maritzburg United 2-0.

Royal AM had beaten Chiefs 4-1 at the FNB Stadium earlier this season.

Royal AM 1-0 Kaizer Chiefs

Victor Letsoalo scored his ninth goal of the season as Royal AM beat Chiefs 1-0 at the Chatsworth Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Siyabonga Ngezana had a half chance in the sixth minute, but it lacked power and Patrick Nyame saved comfortably. Two minutes later Ndumiso Mabena tried to catch Daniel Akpeyi out from a free kick, but the Nigerian goalkeeper was alert and made light work of the save.

Chiefs were close to opening the score in the 16th minute but after Keagan Dolly broke free, he wasn’t able to get a shot off after some good defending by Samuel Manganyi, but he was able cut the ball back to Leonardo Castro, who struck the upright, before the ball bounced into Nyame’s hands.

Both teams were struggling to string movements together, with possession changing hands too easily. However the home team were awarded a penalty when Bernard Parker was adjudged to have fouled Zukile Mkhize in the box in the 37th minute. Letsoalo stepped up and sent Akpeyi the wrong way to make it 1-0.

Parker had a chance to make amends in the 42nd minute, but his header went over the bar, while at the other end Mzwandile Dlamini shot just wide a minute later.

Chiefs went close to getting an equaliser in the 52nd minute, but Dolly couldn’t direct Nkosingiphile Ngcobo’s ball on target. He tried an ambitious attempt in the 58th minute, but it was also wide of goal.

Mabena was just off target on the hour mark, while having only just come on, Khama Billiat shot over in the 65th minute.

Letsoalo almost had his second in the 72nd minute, but his shot from edge of the area struck the woodwork. Given Mashikinya was off target in the 80th minute.

The victory lifts Royal AM up into second spot, while Chiefs are now fourth, one point behind Royal AM and Stellenbosch.

Maritzburg United 0-2 Chippa United

Chippa United picked up three points on the road as they beat Maritzburg 2-0 at the Harry Gwala Stadium.

Bienvenu Eva Nga put Chippa into the lead in the 34th minute, as the striker scored again, his sixth of the season, and fifth in consecutive matches.

In the second half Eva Nga made it 2-0, scoring again in the 67th minute, as he raced clear before toe poking beyond Brylon Petersen.
