Royal AM Promoted? Steenberg Relegated

Royal AM are the 2020/2021 GladAfrica Champions and are set to be promoted to the DStv Premiership, following Sunday’s final games, but there is a still a legal matter that may change the outcome.

This was decided after the last round of fixtures played on Sunday, that saw the would-be-champions decided and also saw Sekhukhune United and Richards Bay qualify for the promotional play-offs.

Sekhukhune beat JDR Stars 3-1 , while Royal AM drew 1-1 with Cape Town All Stars, to finish one point ahead. It took a stoppage time penalty for Royal AM to secure that key point.

However while they won on the day, there was no trophy handover, as there are still matters to be resolved by the PSL, following last week’s DC ruling for Sekhukhune, that saw Sekhukhune awarded 3 points, in a match where Polokwane City failed to have five under-23’s in their squad. However the PSL has not added those points to the tally, as they did not recognise the DC’s decision. This matter still needs to be resolved in arbitration. If it is upheld, Sekhukhune will take top spot and Royal AM will be in the playoffs.

The PSL released the following statement on Sunday to explain why there was no trophy handover.

What is 100% confirmed is Richards Bay’s playoff spot, after they thrashed Steenberg United 4-0 to secure their place, ahead on goal difference from TS Sporting, who beat Pretoria Callies 2-0.

Also confirmed is that Steenberg United were relegated, after they finished 15th, joining bottom team Bizana Pondo Chiefs, as they had to the regional ABC Motsepe Leagues. It was a narrow escape for Cape Town Spurs, formerly Ajax Cape Town, who beat AmaTuks 2-1 to secure the safety in the second tier.

All of Sunday’s results:

Royal AM 1-1 Cape Town All Stars

JDR Stars 1-3 Sekhukhune United

Richards Bay 4-0 Steenberg United

Pretoria Callies 0-2 TS Sporting

Cape Town Spurs 2-1 AmaTuks

Cape United 0-0 Jomo Cosmos

Polokwane City 0-0 Free State Stars

Uthongathi 0-3 Bizana Pondo Chiefs
