Rulani – These Stars Help Maema Shine

Mamelodi Sundowns co-head coach Rulani Mokwena has revealed which two stars have helped Neo Maema at the club since he joined at the start of the season.

Maema joined the club from Bloemfontein Celtic at the start of the 2021/2022 season, and while it didn’t receive much fan fare at the time, Maema has been impressive since breaking into the first team squad.

iDiski Times journalist Rob Delport asked Mokwena after the 2-2 draw against SuperSport United, how the coach feels about Maema’s progress, and Mokwena said he is working hard to get better every day.

Maema was on the scoresheet and also assisted Peter Shalulile’s goal.

Mokwena also praised the mentorship role played by senior players like Themba Zwane and Sibusiso Vilakazi.

“Ja, Rob, look, he comes in, Neo, with the dynamism and the ability to use the left foot very, very well,” Mokwena said in response to the question.

“He’s got a lot of confidence to strike the ball from range also. He’s learning a lot of new things.

“It was good to see the ball that he played for the assist, with that dink over the top, which is something that we’ve been working hard on.

“But good, he is young, he’s energetic, he’s very dynamic, he works very, very hard on the pitch and ja, a very exciting player that’s giving his heart and soul to Mamelodi Sundowns, and I’m sure the the supporters are very happy with with his performances.

“The challenge now is for him to find the consistency and to be able to continue contributing towards the goals, whether through assists or through goals scored. But ja, so far so good.

“The mentorship that he receives from people like Themba Zwane is very important, Vilakazi, they guide and they assist him.

“It takes more than just a house to raise a kid as they say, it’s the responsibility of the entire community, and in this case, it’s the responsibility of the entire change room.”
