The South African Football Association (SAFA) have announced an urgent press conference today, where many are expecting the new Bafana Bafana coach to be announced.
Ever since the association announced that they would be replacing Molefi Ntseki as Bafana coach, following the team’s failure to qualify for next year’s Africa Cup of Nation, there have been twists and turns in the tale of who will be the next coach.
Two weeks ago SAFA announced they would be naming the Bafana coach, but there was a u-turn on the announcement, as SAFA cited covid travel restrictions for the delay.
At first all fingers pointed to former Bafana Bafana coach Carlos Queiroz, who many believed was the frontrunner for the job.
However over the past week, things went into a flurry as current AmaZulu head coach Benni McCarthy looked destined for the role. While it is known that SAFA negotiated with McCarthy’s camp, the two parties couldn’t agree on terms, especially with regards to his back-up staff.
And now, with just hours to what could be the announcement, Hugo Broos, the Afcon-winning Belgian coach, looks to be the favourite for the job. Broos lifted the 2017 Afcon with Cameroon.
The press conference is set for 1pm.
