SSU Confirm Another Addition

SuperSport United CEO Stan Matthews has confirmed that a junior international footballer has joined the club, and could make his mark soon.

Former Ajax Cape Town/Cape Town Spurs defender Kegan Johannes is the player in question, after the 20-year-old left the Mother City club at the end of last season.

Johannes, who iDiski Times spoke to back in Edition 17 of the newspaper, made his professional debut as a teenager for then Ajax, featuring in over 60 games for the club.

At 18 at the time, he was also the youngest member of the national U23 side at the CAF U23 Championship, where he helped South Africa qualify for the Olympics Games, however he was not part of the squad that went to Tokyo.

Matthews, speaking in conversation with the South African Football Journalist Association (SAFJA) on Friday, said Johannes is one of a number of younger players at the club, who are knocking on the door of selection to Kaitano Tembo’s first team squad.

“You’re certainly not going to see us pay transfer fees, because the transfer market really is crazy,” Matthews told SAFJA.

“And there are only a couple of clubs, as I’ve said before that can play in that space, and we are not one of them. And we don’t want to be one of them.

“So we are quite happy to follow the model that we are following at the moment. Getting good young Teboho Mokoenas and Sipho Mbules into our system.

“Luke Fleurs, Jesse Donn, Keenan Phillips, Kegan Johannes, we’ve got some exciting young players that are going to be coming through our ranks over the next couple of years.

“And when it’s time for one to go, like a Luke Fleurs and then a Kegan Johannes comes in, or, Keenan Philips.

“We planning that all the time with our technical team, we’ve got a good grip on where our squad’s going to be over the next three years.”
