Stellies Star Du Preez Targets Pirates Scalp
Stellenbosch FC forward Ashley Du Preez is targeting a win over Orlando Pirates to maintain their unbeaten start to the 2021/22 DStv Premiership season.
Stellies have racked up more wins in 10 games than the entirety of the previous campaign where they scraped through to survive the relegation play-offs spot.
Currently, in second place, five points behind league leaders Mamelodi Sundowns – who have a game in hand – Du Preez has opened up about what’s changed with Steve Barker’s in-form outfit.
“I think the last season was a huge learning process for us as a team with the unbeaten run we’re doing a lot of things right where we concede fewer goals and score more,” he said ahead of the Pirates clash.
“Our will to win matches is one of the key aspects this season, like I said in the beginning it’s a process where we learn and this season we’re well balanced in front and at the back as a team.
“We’re not surprised, we’re glad that the things we’re working on in training are falling into place on match days. We’re more positive, our hard work, resilience and team spirit is working for us as a team where we lacked this last season.”
With five goals and three assists to his name, the 24-year-old has been a key figure in their impressive run and with that, expectations are naturally growing at the club.
But the academy graduate says they are simply targeting the 30 points for safety before they will get together as a squad with the technical team to then propose new goals for the current season.
“I think it’s going to be another important game because they will come out strong for the win but for us as a team, the hunger needs to be more on Wednesday.
“If we can three points against Pirates we’d be so happy, our team target is to get to 30 points as soon as possible and after that, we will reassess [our goals].”
Stellies will host the Soweto giants who are in seventh place in the league at the Danie Craven Stadium on Wednesday (17h30).
