Sundowns Go Top With Arrows Win

Mamelodi Sundowns leapt back to the top of the DStv Premiership table as they beat Golden Arrows 2-1 at the Tuks Stadium on Saturday night.

While the home team took early control, it was Arrows with the first real shot at goal, but Knox Mutizwa’s free-kick attempt in the tenth minute flew. Peter Shalulile went close at the near post in the 18th minute, but Nkosingiphile Gumede made a save before the Namibian could get the final touch on Khuliso Mudau’s cross.

Velemseni Ndwandwe tried from range in the 24th minute, but it was down the throat of Ronwen Williams, who saved comfortably. Four minutes later another chance fell to Shalulile at the near post, but this time his shot hit the side-netting. Marcelo Allende shot wide in the 37th minute.

It was advantage Sundowns in the 43rd minute as Shalulile broke into the box and was brought down by Gumede. He picked himself up to take the penalty and made it 1-0, as he scored his sixth of the season.

In first-half stoppage time, Themba Zwane shot just wide, and at the break Sundowns led by Shalulile’s goal.

Arrows were level four minutes into the second half when Pule Mmodi’s cross-cum-shot caught Ronwen Williams out, beating everyone to fly into the box.

Zwane looked to get Sundowns back in front immediately, but Gumede got a hand to Zwane’s shot from an acute angle in the 50th minute.

And Sundowns were eventually back in the lead in the 59th minute, Zwane ran into the box and cut the ball back and it deflected off two defenders, before flying past Gumede, an unfortunate own goal by Siyavuva Ndlovu.

Williams was needed in the 63rd minute to save Nduduzo Sibiya’s attempt from an acute angle, while Ndwandwe fired over from the resulting corner. Gumede did well in the 67th minute to deny the on-rushing Zwane an attempt at goal. Moments later a crucial interception by Nxadi denied Shalulile setting up his teammates.

Sibiya’s free kick in the 73rd minute wasn’t far off target, while Sundowns substitute Neo Maema shot over a minute later.  Teboho Mokoena’s first-time shot in the 83rd minute was always going over, while two minutes later Nqobeko Dlamini’s well-struck effort was too high.

Dlamini had another chance in the 87th minute, but this time he hit it wide, while Ryan Moon, having just come on, went wide in the 89th minute.

But while Arrows put on a good fight, the defending champions were able to manage the final minutes to take the three points and return to the first position on the league table.
