Teko – Why I Joined Pirates Over Chiefs

Former Bafana Bafana star Teko Modise has explained why he joined Orlando Pirates instead of rivals Kaizer Chiefs, despite supporting Amakhosi when growing up.

The retired midfielder lifted 10 trophies during his playing days, helping Pirates to claim one MTN8 trophy and two Telkom Charity Cups.

However, he could’ve also joined the Glamour Boys instead the Buccaneers after leaving SuperSport United in 2007 but felt that Chiefs didn’t respect him enough in their attempts to lure him to Naturena.

“I was waiting for Chiefs,” he said on the MacG podcast.

“I support Chiefs, I’m waiting for Chiefs to come. Listen I don’t care how much Chiefs are going to pay me.

“Anybody that is an official, let him come and speak to me. I’ve spoke to all those teams and I’ve spoken to officials.

“You know what Kaizer Chiefs does? They sent a player to actually come and talk to me, so I felt disrespected.

“I was like, if Orlando Pirates can actually sent an official to come and talk to me, that’s why I didn’t join Chiefs but I was actually waiting for Kaizer Chiefs.

“That’s the only reason why I didn’t join Kaizer Chiefs, because of how they dealt with the situation because I was waiting for them.”

Modise revealed that instead of sending a club official, Amakhosi opted to send Siphiwe Mkhonza, one of their players at the time, and that’s when he knew they are not the right side for him.

“They sent Siphiwe Mkhonza at the time, cause I played with him at Ria Stars, they sent him to actually come and talk to me.

“No disrespect to Siphiwe but I felt disrespected. I’m like nah, I’m not going to join Chiefs.”

Modise spent four years at Pirates before joining Mamelodi Sundowns, where he had the most successful spell of his career and also won the CAF Champions League in 2016.
