It was an interesting second round of GladAfrica Championship fixtures this past weekend, as the rookie teams sent out a warning to the rest of the league.
Having only just been promoted from the ABC Motsepe Leagues, there were wins for both North West’s Platinum City Rovers and the Northern Cape’s Hungry Lions. Both are unbeaten after two games.
City Rovers are sitting at the top of the table after their 3-2 win over JDR Stars on Saturday, Thabiso Nkoana got two, William Radebe also scored for City Rovers, while Tapiwa Madinyenya and Temptation Chiwunga scored for Stars.
Third-placed Hungry Lions beat Pretoria Callies 2-1 away, Nathaniel Tladi had put Callies in front but a brace from former Mamelodi Sundowns youngster Tlotlego Pitso sealed Lions’ win.
Action started on Friday when Cape Town All Stars bounced back from last week’s defeat and won a five goal thriller 3-2 at home against TS Sporting. Eleazar Rodgers, Ndiviwe Mdabuka and Sirgio Kammies were on the scoresheet for All Stars, while Mohau Mokate and Paseka Sekese scored for Sporting
On Saturday Polokwane City moved up to second with a 2-0 home win over Cape Town Spurs, Simon Ramabu and Hlayisi Chauke scoring while fourth-placed Richards Bay played to a goalless draw against Free State Stars.
Venda Football Academy moved up to fifth as they beat Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila 1-0 thanks to a goal from Tshepo Mofokeng.
On Sunday Uthongathi and Black Leopards drew 1-1, Issa Sarr scored for Uthongathi after Tiklas Thutlwa had put Lidoda Duvha ahead, while Kamohelo Pheeane scored the winner for AmaTuks in a 1-0 win over Jomo Cosmos.
