Tinkler – The Win Was The Most Important Thing

While Cape Town City head Eric Tinkler was pleased with the 4-3 win over Golden Arrows, and while concerned by the team’s second half performance, he was happy to go into next week’s MTN8 final on the back of a win.

City took a 4-0 lead, but a fight back from Arrows saw the game end tensely as the Durban side scored three in reply, and came close to grabbing a point.

Tinkler says after an exceptional first half, they found things tough going in the second half, especially after the injury to captain Thami Mkhize.

“Ja, I think the first 45 minutes we put on an exceptional performance and display,” Tinkler said after the game.

“I thought we controlled the match in the first half, they looked to press us, but we managed to get out of their press. We were patient on the ball, we moved the ball with good speed and support, and we created so many chances that we could have come in at halftime six up instead of three up.

“So the first half performance exceptional, so I was very, very happy with the team, just explained that this team will continue pressing, they don’t change the way they play, they still gonna look to press as high, very important that we make sure that at the back we don’t give the ball away cheaply. We want to keep a clean sheet, we don’t want to give anything away.

“We started the second half very, very well. We caught them on the counter, fantastic counter with Craig Martin scoring the fourth goal from a defensive corner.

“And then ja, then everything fell apart. Unfortunately, I think losing Thami Mkhize when we did, due to injury, I think that was there was a big loss, because all three goals at the end of the day came down our right hand side. And we put ourselves really, really under pressure the last 15 minutes.”

But Tinkler adds the win was key, especially ahead of next week’s MTN8 final against Mamelodi Sundowns.

“It was tough, tough, the boys had to fight hard to ensure that we kept the 4-3 win, but the win was the most important thing today,” he continued.

“Yes, keeping the clean sheet would have been fantastic, the goal difference would have been fantastic for us, but the win was very, very, very important leading into a cup final.”
