Former Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Benedict ‘Tso’ Vilakazi is concerned by AmaZulu coach Benni McCarthy’s touchline behaviour during matches.
Tso believes that the former Bafana Bafana striker still behaves as a player instead of being a coach.
McCarthy was caught on camera during a clash between Usuthu and SuperSport United exchanging words with Kaitano Tembo on the sidelines but later insisted he was provoked by his opponent.
“One of the things they emphasize when we are doing our coaching certificates is the ability to transition from being a player to being coach,” Vilakazi wrote in his iDiski Times column.
“I don’t think it has dawned on Benni that he is no longer a player. I think in his mind he still thinks he is a player.
“When he was a player he was a fighter and he never shield away from tense confrontations and I think he still stuck in that mode.
“As a coach, you need to understand that your conduct sets the tone for the rest of your players. If you are always angry or you are always swearing, the players will follow your lead and copy your behavior.
“It is important to always calm yourself and be in control of your emotions. It becomes easier for players to listen to you when they can see you calm.
“If Benni can accept that he is no longer a player, it will help him a great deal in his coaching career. He needs to do better when he is on the bench.”
