‘We Wanted To Repeat What We Did With Pitso’

Manqoba Mngqithi has revealed Mamelodi Sundowns coaching team were aiming to win the title at SuperSport United – just as they did with Pitso Mosimane in 2014.

Sundowns beat SuperSport 3-1 at Loftus Stadium on Wednesday to confirm the title, and Mngqithi said it was extra special because it replicated the first time he was involved in a title win with Sundowns with Pitso Mosimane.

Sundowns moved to 60 points on the league table, and are ten points ahead of second-place AmaZulu, with three games left to play.

“I think the game was simplified by the red card very early in the match,” Mngqithi said in the post match presser.

“Though it also made us to lose a player like Mkhulise, who was doing very well. But we did anticipate It’s going to be an easy game again SuperSport, with a lot of second balls, a lot of high balls, Gabuza, Grobler. We also knew that they’ve got strong players that can shoot from range Mbuli, Mokoena, Grobler always been a handful in this space.

“But we wanted to give it our best shot, we wanted to win the championship from this match. It’s always nicer when you win a derby, and you win the championship.

“The first championship we won with Coach Pitso was here in the stadium. And we were playing against SuperSport. And we wanted to replicate that. And win it in a derby because in as much as we could win it anywhere else, but when you win it at home in a derby, it’s nicer, and it gives you a little bit more of the pride.

“But I must say our first half was clinical, we tried our best to to bury the chances that we created. But our second half was very scrappy, I was very unhappy with the second half, which is why we ended up even making a lot of changes to try and ignite some fire and the willingness to to really stabilize our authority within the game.

“But we lost control of the game. Not that we were we were under pressure, but we we did not dominate the way we wanted to dominate. There is no reason why a team that is leading three nil should be caught on a break. There is no reason why a team that is leading three nil should be should be so open in the zone where Mokoena scored that goal and those were very saddening moments.

“Because to be honest, we never really deserved to concede, based on the performance that we had given but yeh, that’s that’s football for you.”
