Hungry Lions Set MFC Pace

The first round of the Motsepe Foundation Championship was completed this weekend, with Hungry Lions going top on goal difference ahead of four other teams who won their opening games.

Lions beat AmaTuks 2-0 on Saturday, and were one of five winning clubs on the weekend, with three matches ending in draws.

On Friday, Pretoria Callies and Black Leopards played to a goalless draw, and it was also a 0-0 result between Venda Football Club and JDR Stars on Saturday. On Sunday, Casric Stars and Marumo Gallants fought out to a 2-2 draw.

La Masia were the first club to pick up a win, as they beat newcomers Upington City 1-0 on Friday afternoon. Later that evening Maritzburg United started life in the second tier with a good 1-0 victory over neighbours Milford, who are in their first campaign in pro football after buying the Uthongathi franchise.

Orbit College, who were promoted alongside Upington City, began with a good 2-1 win over neighbours Platinum City Rovers.

Magesi won Sunday’s Limpopo derby as they came out 2-1 victors at Baroka.
