Barker – How I Picked Up Players After Chiefs Heartbreak

Stellenbosch FC head coach Steve Barker says it was not difficult to pick up his players up after their controversial loss to Kaizer Chefs in the quarter-finals of the Nedbank Cup.

Chiefs scored a dramatic and controversial stoppage time goal through Pule Mmodi and later a winner at FNB stadium last month to seal a 3-1 victory and passage to the last four round.

Barker spoke to iDiski Times Editor Rob Delport in edition 198 of the newspaper where he admitted the incident opened up old wounds of a similar situation in the MTN8 final against Orlando Pirates.

However, the coach also said they have a culture in the team of getting over things even if when it’s a win.

“Ja, it was,” Barker told iDiski Times.

“It was quite uncanny, how sort of deja vu it was. Similar situations, a goal that probably should not have stood, where you could’ve seen out the game and taken it to extra-time. Obviously, everyone is now down, and you just push everybody forward, and then on both occasions, we conceded the third. So, ja, definitely a lot of deja vu in both situations.

“So, we’ve learned, and we’ve always had the motto at our club, that you’ve got to get back to zero within 24 hours, whether it’s a victory or whether it’s a loss. You can’t dwell on the past, and it’s either you are bitter, or you become better. So, we choose the latter.

“So ja, we’re long past that, and we’re looking forward now to the remainder of the league and also the Confed campaign.”
