Three former Premier Soccer League players have picked their winners for the upcoming PSL awards, but none selected Relebohile Mofokeng for the Nedbank Cup Most Promising Player.
Mofokeng, 20, won the award last season and is again nominated for the award – this year alongside his teammates Mohau Nkota and Mbekezeli Mbokazi, with the awards ceremony set to take place at 7pm on Tuesday.
But former pros Nathan Paulse, Clayton Daniels and Lucky Mhlathe don’t believe Mofokeng should win the award this year, with two of them picking Nkota.
“I don’t think giving it to Rele would be right because I believe he has gone past the stage of being a promising player,” Paulse told iDiski Times’ Matshelane Mamabolo.
“I think going forward, they should not just look at the age but must consider how many seasons a player has been playing. Mohau Nkota is my choice here.”
Nkota, who played in four of Pirates’ games in the competition, also got the vote from Daniels.
“Mohau is the Most Promising Player for me, and I think there’s a lot to come from him,” Daniels said.
“Even if he’d stayed at Pirates, we were going to see him blossoming. He’s got a very bright future.”
Mbokazi featured in three games, scoring in their penalty shootout win over SuperSport United, with Mhlathe believing he’s done enough to win the gong.
“He was a big player for Pirates in the Cup,” he added.
“I remember he got Man of the Match in his first game against SuperSport and even in the second game of the Nedbank Cup.
“He was marking players who could do damage to Pirates and keeping them in the pocket.”
