Was Shalulile Correctly Ruled Offside? Hlungwani Explains…

Mamelodi Sundowns striker Peter Shalulile was correctly flagged offside by Romario Phiri, according to former PSL referee Victor Hlungwani.

The Masandwana marksman thought he had grabbed the winning goal in the 98th minute in their Nedbank Cup quarter-final clash against Sekhukhune United at Loftus Versfeld last Friday only for his goal to be ruled offside.

Miguel Cardoso’s charges eventually sealed the narrow 1-0 win deep in extra-time courtesy of substitute Jayden Adams’ 119th-minute strike to book a crunch semi-final clash against Kaizer Chiefs.

In his post-match interview, Cardoso slammed the officials for not giving his side the goal with Hlungwani then detailing why the Namibian international was not given the goal and instead ruled offside.

“Coach Cardoso was crying saying this goal was ruled offside incorrectly. Let’s go coach and dissect this one together to see if Shalulile was in an offside position or not,” “The Principal” said on Soccerzone.

“Offside is when a player is nearer to his opponent’s goal line than both the ball and second-last opponent.

“So, we’ll see here when we draw the line that is there any part of Shalulile nearer to the opponent’s goal line?

“If you look at it there when the cross was made, you’ll see the white socks. That white socks is above anyone. It’s closer to the goal line.

“So, that white socks, it’s in an offside position even plays the ball, therefore offside.

“So, coach Cardoso, the problem is the white socks. So, that white socks declared this offside.

“Romario Phiri [referee], correct decision by Romario Phiri to flag for offside because Shalulile was nearer to his opposition’s goal line than both the ball and the second-last opponent.”
