After six years plying his trade for French Ligue 1 outfit RC Strasbourg, Bafana Bafana striker Lebogang Mothiba has left the club, with his current contract set to expire on June 30.
The 28-year-old lanky marksman, who hails from Johannesburg, joined Strasbourg from fellow French side LOSC Lille in 2022 and went on to feature in 96 games across all competitions, scoring 20 goals and providing six assists.
He also won the French League Cup when they edged out Lebo Phiri’s former side EA Guingamp 4-1 on penalties after the final had ended in a dull goalless draw.
Mothiba has struggled with injuries over the past couple of years which also saw him lose his place in the national team set-up.
This season, under the stewardship of French football legend Patrick Vieira, Mothiba scored just three goals in 14 French Ligue 1 outings.
The club released a statement on Thursday thanking the player for his service.
“Mothiba, Mothiba, Thank you for these 6 years,” the statement read on the club’s official X page.
It remains to be seen where the South African international will next play his football, and will most likely stay in Europe after overcoming his injury struggles.
