Dithejane Expresses Bafana Squad World Cup hopes

Chicago Fire FC’s recent signing, winger Puso Dithejane, has expressed strong hopes of making the Bafana Bafana squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The global tournament is scheduled to take place from 11 June to 19 July 2026 across the United States, Mexico, and Canada.

Interestingly, Dithejane now finds himself based in one of the host nations after completing a move from TS Galaxy in January.

His transfer to Chicago followed that of fellow South African defender Mbekezeli Mbokazi, who also joined the MLS side from Orlando Pirates.

The 21-year-old winger has previously earned call-ups to preliminary national team squads on several occasions, including for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), although he has yet to make a final selection.

Dithejane represented Bafana Bafana at the 2025 COSAFA Cup, where he impressed with his performances and was named in the tournament’s group-stage Best XI.

He believes that his move to Major League Soccer marks an important step forward in his career and strengthen his chances of securing a regular place in the national team setup ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

“This is a step forward in my career as a footballer,” said Dithejane during the Football Journalist Association (SAFJA).

“I obviously will work hard where I am in Chicago so I can be selected to be part of the 23-man squad that will play for South Africa.

“I want to help my country or my team do well in the World Cup.”
