Links’ Unexpected Childhood Hero

Gift Links has made a surprise confession about former Namibian striker Henrico Botes as the player he idolised when he was promoted to senior football at Platinum Stars.

Links, now a star wingback at Danish outfit AGF, had different ideas of where he wanted to play when he first came through as a teenager.

The diminutive Links’ surprisingly idolised the tall ex-Brave Warriors marksman, who at over six feet, was quite a different player to the young Links.

But that didn’t stop Links from wearing the number nine jersey at Dikwena’s youth teams, though he soon came to the realisation that he would not be a striker like Botes.

“It’s a funny one, because I don’t think a lot of people think about it, but I Ioved Henrico Botes,” Links admitted to Rob Delport in the latest edition of iDiski Times e-paper.

“So, when I joined the academy, Platinum Stars, in 2011 after coming back from Norway for a tournament, then I fell in love with Henrico Botes because I was joining Platinum Stars, and he was playing for Platinum Stars as well.

“So, I remember when I got to the academy as well. I even chose number nine because I just loved him so much, Henrico, and I even just started playing as a striker.

“But then after a few months, I was like, ‘I don’t think I will succeed as a striker,’ because I’m not so tall, I’m not so strong. So yeah, I took a chance, but yeah, but he was one guy that I love the most.”
