Makhanya – How It Felt To Share The Pitch With Messi

Sharing a pitch with record breaking Ballon D’or winner Lionel Messi was one of the things that Olwethu Makhanya was looking forward to when he moved to the MLS to join Philadelphia Union.

Makhanya told IDiski Times then about how he has always admired the Argentine growing up. In the latest edition of the newspaper the Kwa Zulu Natal born teenager tells IDiski Times writer Lethabo Kganyago how he hasn’t had a chance to actually play against him yet as he is still working on getting his first start.

The former Stellenbosch defender reveals he did get close to the Inter Miami man and even shook his hand after one of the matches.

“I was actually on the bench when we played Inter Miami.” Makhanya told iDiski Times.

“That was the first time I was in the 18-man match day squad. I was on the bench, on the pitch, watching the game very closely and (sighs) ja I won’t lie, it was a great experience.”

“Growing up we all know Messi as the GOAT, the best player in the world and to actually share a field with him is unbelievable and I got to shake his hand after the game.”

You can read Makhanya’s full interview with Kganyago in edition 138 available on the website.
