Rangers defender Olwethu Makhanya has named former Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Bongani Zungu as one of his footballing idols while growing up in South Africa.

The 22-year-old Bafana Bafana player secured a move to Scottish powerhouse Rangers from Philadelphia Union in the MLS ahead of the current season.

Makhanya has made an encouraging start to his Rangers career, featuring in 12 matches across all competitions and starting every one of them. His performances have helped him establish himself as a reliable option in the heart of the defence.

The South African youngster explained that playing for a club as prestigious as Rangers was something he had always dreamed of while growing up.

He revealed that Zungu, who also previously played for Rangers, was among the players he looked up to. Meanwhile, Makhanya shares a similarity with ‘Ben 10’ through his ability to play as a defensive midfielder.

“To be part of this club is a dream come true. I have always wanted to play at this level, especially coming from South Africa,” said Makhanya, as per Rangers website.

“When I was young, I used to look up to Bongani Zungu, who happens to have played for the club, so being here for me is unreal and a real blessing.”
