Mosimane Reveals Motivation For Saudi Return

Pitso Mosimane has revealed that one of the reasons for his switch to Abha Football Club was “to finish his story” in Saudi Arabia after parting ways with Al Ahli Jeddah despite leading them back into the Saudi Pro League.

Mosimane led Al Ahli, who were relegated to the first division in Saudi Arabia for the first time in their history, back into the Pro League and he did with distinction after securing promotion with four games to spare and also securing the Yelo League title.

He has now returned to Saudi Arabia after joining Abha on a short-term deal, with the task to save the club, who are without a win in eight league games, from relegation.

“It’s going to be a bumpy ride,” Mosimane told The National.

“Abha is one of the league’s ‘small’ teams. But there’s ambition, there’s a bit of experience. We need to try to do things a little differently.

“If we can save them from relegation, there’s an opportunity to then make them much, much better. It’s an adventure, and I like adventures.”

Mosimane also admitted that the landscape in Saudi Arabia has changed after the Public Investment Fund pumped truckloads of money into the four founding members of the league, namely Al Hilal, Al Nassr, Al Ittihad and Mosimane’s former club Al Ahli.

“With the differences between those four clubs and rest, it can seem like we’re their sparring partners,” he added.

“But for me it’s about the challenge and, I guess, I’m trying to finish a story. If I personalise it, I won promotion to this league with Al Ahli, so I should be in the Pro League.

“Of course the conditions are different. It’s now the biggest league in the Gulf, maybe in Asia.”

Mosimane makes his Abha debut against fourth-placed Al-Taawoun on Thursday.
