South African midfielder Keanin Ayer has officially been unveiled at Norweigian top-flight side Sandefjord.
The 21-year-old rejected a contract offer from Allsvenskan side Varbergs BoIS last month after three and a half years at the Swedish top-flight club.
Ayer was seeking more regular game time in his preferred midfield position, after being fielded in a wing-back role for most of his time under head coach Joakim Persson.
As reported by iDiski Times last week, Ayer has signed for the Eliteserien side on a three-year contract as he now looks towards developing further in Europe.
“My first impression of Sandefjord is that this is a very nice town and club. I’ve been here a few weeks now, and the people here seem very nice. So I look forward to playing football in Sandefjord,” he said after his unveiling.
“I come here to take new steps and will of course fight to play for the team. This is a great opportunity for me to play at a high level in Norway, and I look forward to developing further as a football player.”
The club’s managing director Espen Bugge Pettersen believes they’ve secured a major coup in the form of the Right to Dream Academy product.
“In Keanin we get an exciting player who despite his young age has good experience from the Swedish top level. He has high intensity and aggression in his game,” he said.
“He covers large rooms, has good speed and good passing quality. He has slightly different qualities than the types we have in the inner runner role from before, which means that we will have more strings to play on.”
Ayer reached up 50 appearances for Varbergs during his time at the club, having joined them as an 18-year-old whilst they were in the second-tier of Swedish football.
