Banyana Banyana duo Jermaine Seoposenwe and Thembi Kgatlana will not get a chance to face off against each other in the final of Mexico’s Liga MX Women Clausura Play Offs.
Seoposenwe’s Monterrey advanced to their first ever Clausara final, while her teammate at national team level Kgatlana saw her side and two-time champions Tigres UANL crash out.
Monterrey has reached the semi-finals of the Clausura playoffs four times in the past four seasons, though they had lost all four of them.
This time around, Monterrey were in tip-top form, winning both legs against Pachuca. They won the first leg 2-0 at home and bettered that in the second leg away from home with an emphatic 4-2 victory. Seoposenwe laid two assists for Christina Burkenroad, as they advanced with a 6-2 aggregate score.
Kgatlana’s Tigres UANL had a mountain to climb going into the second leg having lost the first leg 3-1 away from home against America. Despite winning the second leg 1-0, that result wasn’t enough to see them advance as they crashed out, having lost 3-2 on aggregate.
Monterrey battle defending champions America away from home in the first leg final on Saturday, May 25, before hosting them in the return leg final on Tuesday, May 28.
America clinched the title last year after they beat Pachuca 2-1 in both legs for their first title.
Since moving to Mexico, the Banyana duo have had impressive starts for their respective sides, with Kgatlana netting six goals in 18 outings for Tigres while Seoposenwe has found the back of the net 20 times in 57 matches for both Juarez (2022/23 season) and Monterrey during the current campaign.
