Despite sealing Excellence Cup progression, Wydad Athletic Club head coach Rulani Mokwena has claimed he is focused on delivering league honours for his new team.
Mokwena has found it hard to settle at Wydad AC with the introduction of the Excellence Cup which is played during the international break and must feature the U21s.
So far, Wydad have lost two official matches under Mokwena, one in the Botola Pro and one in the Excellence Cup, though the Red Castle hammered JSM 5-0 in the recent Excellence Cup match.
Speaking with the media, Mokwena made a bold statement, saying that he is not worried about Excellence Cup games, but is at Wydad AC to win the league, which they last won in the 2021/22 season.
“Congratulations to the player, to the team, they trained well,” Mokwena told the media.
“Okay, I’m not here to win the Excellence Cup games. I’m here to win the league. So, we focus on the league right now.”
Wydad will resume their season against bottom-placed SC Chabab Mohammedia who are yet to win an official match since March 2024, and also have a bad record against Wydad, winning just one of their 17 clashes.
