Rulani Reveals Club World Cup Target After Drawing Pep

Wydad Athletic Club head coach Rulani Mokwena has revealed his target for the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup after drawing Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City in one of the toughest groups.

Wydad, who qualified for the winning the CAF Champions League in 2022, beating Pitso Mosimane’s Al Ahly 2-0, have been drawn in Group G alongside City, Juventus and Al Ain.

Wydad are the only African team to face two European sides, with one of Mokwena’s personal dreams coming true in facing Pep Guardiola.

However, the South African tactician insisted the target is to win one match at the tournament and gain as much experience as possible from facing some of the world’s best clubs.

“When you have a group like this you can’t lose,” he said during Wydad’s live-streaming of the draw.

“You play three very good teams – Man City, of course, with the pedigree, you know the quality you will get.

“Juventus are Juventus, strong. This season probably playing the best football and probably very similar to Manchester City.

“And Al Ain are the Asian champions. So, when you play in a group like this you can’t lose.

“We have to try to win one match, so when you’re in a group like this you can’t lose. This is our third Club World Cup with Wydad.

“We have not won one match in the World Cup, so the goal is to win one match. And you wait to see what will happen thereafter because even if you don’t qualify from the group but the experience you get from playing Manchester City, from playing Juventus is an experience that will make the team even stronger for the seasons coming.

“I think it’s a good group and a good draw for us.”
